Sermon Notes
  1. The Challenge: To accept one another’s differences without trying to change them to become more like us.
  2. How many of us have judged someone else in some way, just because they are different?
  3. It’s easy to assume that differences are defects and are indications that something is wrong with the other person
  4. Luke 18:10-14 CSB
“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee was standing and praying like this about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like other people—greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of everything I get.’ “But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this one went down to his house justified rather than the other, because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
  5. Romans 14:1-4 CSB
Welcome anyone who is weak in faith, but don’t argue about disputed matters. One person believes he may eat anything, while one who is weak eats only vegetables. One who eats must not look down on one who does not eat, and one who does not eat must not judge one who does, because God has accepted him. Who are you to judge another’s household servant? Before his own Lord he stands or falls. And he will stand, because the Lord is able to make him stand.
  6. Romans 14:4a CSB
Who are you to judge another’s household servant? Before his own Lord he stands or falls.
  7. What gives us the right to consider someone “glitched” when they’re just different from us?
  8. 1 Corinthians 13:4 CSB

Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, is not boastful, is not arrogant…
  9. Love does not say: “You gotta be like me”
Love says: “Let me help you become more like Jesus”
  10. Just because something is different doesn’t mean it is wrong
  11. 1. This week, when you come across something different, ask yourself: “Is it wrong, or is it just different?”
    2. If it is just different, get curious! Seek to understand it and love the person despite the difference

Discussion Questions
  1. In this message, Darien challenges us to accept people’s differences without trying to make them more like us. In your opinion, what makes it difficult to accept people who think, act, talk, or do things differently than we do?
  2. In Luke 18:10-14, the Pharisee thanked God that he was “not like other people.” What do you think was wrong with the Pharisee’s attitude? In your experience, how can we fall into the same mindset when comparing ourselves to other people?
  3. Romans 14:1-4 discusses people in the church who had differing opinions about what they should eat and which practices were important. In response to this division, Paul tells them to stop judging or looking down on one another, for each person will be accountable to the Lord. In your experience, what are some differences we can be tempted to judge, even though they aren’t necessarily right or wrong?
  4. The message challenged us to ask ourselves, “Is it wrong, or is it just different” when facing differences we don’t understand or agree with. Think about your own relationships with other people, and some of the differences you have encountered. How can asking this question change the way you respond to people who are different from you?
  5. 1 Corinthians 13:4 says that “Love is… not arrogant”. In your opinion, what do humility and love look like when we disagree with someone? What does it mean to recognize that we are not the standard others must meet?
  6. Take a second to think about someone in your life who is different from you in some way. What is one way you could get curious, seek to understand them, and intentionally show them love this week?
