  1. Matthew 22:37-39 CSB
    He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.
  2. John 13:34-35 CSB
    “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
  3. Are you living your life in a way that allows God’s love to change how you see, treat and love the people around you?
  4. Isaiah 1:11-13a, 15 CSB
    “What are all your sacrifices to me?” asks the Lord. “I have had enough of burnt offerings and rams and the fat of well-fed cattle; I have no desire for the blood of bulls, lambs, or male goats. When you come to appear before me, who requires this from you— this trampling of my courts? Stop bringing useless offerings… When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will refuse to look at you; even if you offer countless prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood.”
  5. Isaiah 1:16-17 CSB
    “Wash yourselves. Cleanse yourselves. Remove your evil deeds from my sight. Stop doing evil. Learn to do what is good. Pursue justice. Correct the oppressor. Defend the rights of the fatherless. Plead the widow’s cause.”
  6. 1 John 4:20 CSB
    If anyone says, “I love God,” and yet hates his brother or sister, he is a liar. For the person who does not love his brother or sister whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
  7. You cannot genuinely pursue the God who loves people while remaining indifferent to the people He loves
  8. 1 John 4:19 CSB
    We love because he first loved us. 
  9. We learn to love others by becoming more aware of God’s love for us
  10. 1. Ask yourself: “Who am I struggling to love? Why is it hard to love this person?”
    2. Ask yourself: “How has God loved me, even when I have been difficult to love?”
    3. Ask God: “How do you see this person? What do you love about them?”
    4. Pray: “Jesus, help me to love them, like you love me.”
Discussion Questions
  1. In John 13:34-35, Jesus said that people will recognize His disciples by their love for one another. What do you think it means for love to be evidence of our relationship with God?
  2. Isaiah 1 describes people who continued worshipping God while mistreating others. Why do you think it can sometimes be easier to focus on religious activity (such as loving and worshiping God) than on loving people well?
  3. In the sermon, Darien emphasized that love is more than a feeling, it is a choice. What are some practical ways we can choose to love someone, even when we don’t feel like it?
  4. Without sharing names, who is someone you are currently struggling to love? What makes loving that person so difficult? How can you be more intentional about showing them love?
  5. 1 John 4:19 says “We love because He first loved us.” How has God shown you grace, patience, forgiveness, and love? How might remembering that change the way you treat others?
  6. What is one specific way you sense Jesus challenging you to better demonstrate His love to someone this week?
